Your Child's First Dental Visit at Children's Dental Center of Monmouth

Why the First Visit is Important

The first dental visit sets the foundation for a lifetime of positive oral health at the Children's Dental Center of Monmouth in Red Bank, NJ. We believe in creating a warm and friendly environment where children feel comfortable and confident during their dental appointments.

The first dental visit is crucial for several reasons. It allows our experienced pediatric dentists to assess your child's oral health, identify any potential issues, and provide personalized care and guidance. It's an opportunity for us to establish a trusting relationship with your child, helping them develop a positive attitude towards dental care.

What can you expect on your first visit?

During the first visit, our gentle and compassionate team will thoroughly examine your child's teeth, gums, and bite. We will also take the time to educate you and your child about proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and the importance of a balanced diet.

We understand that each child is unique, and our approach is tailored to their individual care. We will address any concerns or questions you may have and ensure that your child's visit is a positive experience.

Information about Teeth

As you grow, you will have two sets of teeth: primary (baby) teeth and secondary (permanent) teeth. Primary teeth usually show up when you're about 5-7 months old, and you'll have all 20 of them by the time you're 24-36 months old.

Your permanent teeth usually start to grow around the age of 6, and except for your wisdom teeth, you should have all your permanent teeth by the time you're between the ages of 12 and 14. Your six-year molars will show up behind your last baby tooth, but none of your baby teeth will fall out when they come in. Wisdom teeth typically start to show up when you're around 16-17 years old. You'll have a total of 32 permanent teeth, including your wisdom teeth.

Your incisors are your front teeth, your canines are your sharp "fang-like" teeth, your premolars or bicuspids (which are actually molars for baby teeth) are your side teeth, and your molars are your back teeth. Since your permanent teeth are the ones you'll keep for your whole life, it is important to brush and floss them regularly and have them checked by a dentist on a regular basis.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene with Brushing and Flossing

BRUSHING

To ensure optimal oral hygiene, brushing your teeth four times a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste is advised. However, if the child is under the age of 3, using only water and a soft-bristled toothbrush is recommended. For children over 3, parents should supervise brushing and ensure that the child does not swallow the toothpaste. Brush in small circular motions, covering all areas between teeth and the surface of each tooth. Take your time to brush thoroughly for several minutes. Brush up on the lower teeth, down on the upper teeth, and the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of all front and back teeth. Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before rinsing with water.

It is essential to replace your toothbrush with a new one as soon as the bristles start to wear down or fray. Do not swallow toothpaste; rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after brushing.

FLOSSING

Dental floss is essential for removing food particles and plaque from areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Use dental floss every day to clean between your teeth. Take a small length of floss from the dispenser and wrap the ends tightly around your middle fingers. Guide the floss between all teeth to the gum line, pulling out any food particles or plaque. Unwrap clean floss from around your fingers as you go, so that you have used the floss from beginning to end when you finish. Floss behind all of your back teeth for optimal oral hygiene.
